Bosnia Food & Wine Tour · Taste new fine wine and discover another country
What better way to experience a new country but through its people, food and, of course, wine. This is the tour where we combine history, culture, gastronomy and great wines.
At relaxed pace with short driving distances this is your chance to visit another country, go deep in the 15.ct monastery Cellars of Tvrdos Orthodox monastery and taste monks’ wine, followed by a great photo view point at the monastery of Herzegovinian Gracanica. Next is winery located in Trebinje where you will taste a wine, brandies, their prosciutto, fritters and cream cheese. We wrap it all up with visit to small village of Tuli and a delicious 2 course meal with local wine. You will have the chance to try local specialties like veal and lamb under the iron bell or wild river trout.
Located less then 35 km from Dubrovnik (22 miles) Trebinje area in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a world of its own, completely different than the coastal area of Dubrovnik Riviera. Limestone hills, small fertile pockets of land following the river flow, flocks of sheep and goats grazing and endless vineyards will immediately capture your imagination.
Departing Dubrovnik we come to Bosnian border in 20 min (expect 5-20 min border waiting time) and after a short drive though inlands of Bosnia and across Friar’s Field we reach the city of Trebinje.
We start by driving up to the top of Gracanica hill above Trebinje for great panoramic views of the city so that your guide can explain the geography of the area and show you all the spots that you will visit during the tour. A visit the Orthodox monastery of Gracanica standing at the top of the hill is also possible (free of charge).
We drive a further 5 km away to the 15ct Orthodox monastery of Tvrdos where monks have been producing wine for centuries until they blew up the monastery when it was about to be taken over by the Ottomans in 1700s. We will visit their ancient cellars and taste some of their best white and red wine. Your guide will explain about the wine and the current hard working monk life-style.
After tasting monks’ wine, we will drive down to the center of Trebinje town, where your guide will take you on a short historical walk through its Austrian (19ct) and Turkish (18ct) city center. Later, will drive to family owned winery in Trebinje area where you will taste a wine, brandies, their prosciutto, fritters and cream cheese, all served and explained by an owner.
Finally we move 6 kilometers (4 miles) out to the hills beyond Trebinje to village of Tuli. There we stop in a family owned restaurant serving traditional domestic Bosnian food. You will have a delicious 2 course lunch paired with local wine and liqueurs.
After dinner, we drive back to Dubrovnik (around 40-60 min drive depending on border crossing) and you will be back in the hotel/apartment, just after sunset.
